Wayground Power-Ups Explained: Full List, Strategy & Teacher Controls

Power-ups are the reason a Wayground (formerly Quizizz) game feels different from a plain quiz: mid-game boosts that multiply points, protect answer streaks, or eliminate wrong options. Students love them, but most players use them badly — and many teachers do not realize they can be turned off entirely. This guide explains how power-ups work, what the common ones do, the smart way to use each, and how teachers should think about them when games are graded.

How Power-Ups Work

During a live Classic or Team game, players earn power-ups as they play — typically by answering correctly, building streaks, or at random moments the platform decides. An earned power-up sits in your inventory until you activate it, usually taking effect on the next question. Power-ups influence game points, not your accuracy percentage: a 2x multiplier doubles the points from a correct answer, but the report your teacher sees still records simply whether you answered correctly.

That distinction matters: leaderboard position is a game; the accuracy column is the assessment. Teachers grade from accuracy (see our reports guide), so power-ups never make a wrong answer right.

Common Wayground Power-Ups Explained

The exact lineup rotates as the platform evolves, but these are the power-ups players encounter most often:

  • 50-50: removes half of the wrong options on a multiple-choice question. The single most valuable power-up on hard questions — worthless on questions you already know.
  • Immunity: your next wrong answer does not count against your streak. Insurance for the question type you dread.
  • Streak Saver / Streak Booster: protects or amplifies your consecutive-correct-answer multiplier — the quiet engine behind every top leaderboard score.
  • 2x Multiplier (Double Points): doubles points earned on the next question. Best saved for a question you are confident about.
  • Time Freeze: stops the countdown on one question, removing the speed penalty while you think.
  • Power Play: a rarer one — boosts points for everyone for a short window, which can shake up a settled leaderboard late in the game.
  • Glitch: a mischief power-up that briefly scrambles opponents' screens. Purely cosmetic chaos; it never changes anyone's recorded answers.

Strategy: Using Power-Ups Like a Top Player

  1. Protect the streak above everything. Streak multipliers compound across the whole game; a broken streak costs more than any single question. Immunity and Streak Saver beat flashier options.
  2. Spend 50-50 on genuine uncertainty. Using it on an easy question wastes the biggest accuracy boost in the game.
  3. Pair multipliers with confidence. Activate 2x only when the next topic is your strength — doubling zero is still zero.
  4. Slow down with Time Freeze on long questions. The speed bonus is small compared to the cost of a wrong rushed answer.

For Teachers: Managing Power-Ups

  • Turning them off: when starting a live activity, open the game settings and disable power-ups — or simply use Test mode, which removes power-ups, memes, and the leaderboard in one switch. Recommended any time the score feeds a gradebook.
  • Leaving them on: for review games, power-ups measurably raise engagement — students who trail early keep playing because a comeback feels possible. That comeback mechanic is a feature, not a flaw, for practice sessions.
  • Homework assignments: power-ups can appear in assigned games too; the same rule applies — grade from accuracy, and see our homework mode guide for the settings that keep practice honest.
  • Fairness questions: because power-ups never alter accuracy data, they cannot inflate a grade — but if students perceive unfairness on the leaderboard, Team mode averages scores and softens the race.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do power-ups change my grade?

No. They change leaderboard points only. Teachers see your actual right/wrong answers in reports.

How do I get more power-ups?

Answer correctly and keep streaks alive — consistent play earns them. There is no way to buy them mid-game.

Can teachers see who used power-ups?

Teachers primarily see accuracy and points; the game may surface power-up moments during play, but the report focuses on answers.

Why did my power-ups disappear?

Power-ups are per-game — inventories reset every new game, and Test mode games never have them.

Are power-ups on Wayground the same as on Quizizz?

Yes — the platform renamed to Wayground in 2025 but the game mechanics carried over. Read what changed in the rebrand.
