How to Turn Any PDF or Textbook Chapter Into a Quiz With AI
You have a chapter PDF or a scanned reading packet and want twenty practice questions from it by tomorrow. AI can do most of that work, but the gap between a usable quiz and a pile of vague questions comes down to how you prepare the file, what you ask for, and how carefully you check the output. This guide covers the whole workflow to create a quiz from PDF with AI, including what usually goes wrong: scanned pages, chapters over a tool’s input limit, diagrams and equations, and answers that sound right but are not.
The Workflow in Six Steps
Interfaces differ, but the process is the same: prepare the source, decide what you are testing, pick a tool, generate, review, export.
Step 1: Prepare the PDF
Open the PDF and try to select a sentence. If the text highlights, the file has a real text layer and any AI tool can read it. If the cursor draws a box instead, the page is an image and the tool sees only pixels.
Image-only PDFs need OCR (optical character recognition) first: Acrobat’s built-in OCR, Google Drive (upload the PDF, then open it with Google Docs, which runs OCR automatically), or a free online OCR service. Some quiz tools accept image uploads and read text directly, but results vary with scan quality. Always skim the converted text: OCR mangles columns, footnotes, superscripts and handwriting, and a mangled fact makes a mangled question.
Also strip out what you do not want tested. Front matter, publisher notices, opening quotes and the “further reading” list all give AI material to generate questions about, none of which belongs on your assessment.
Step 2: Decide What You Actually Want to Test
This is the step people skip, and it determines quality. Write down the concepts to cover and the cognitive level you want. A chapter on cellular respiration can be tested at the level of “name the three stages” or “predict what happens to ATP yield without oxygen.” Those are different quizzes from one source. If the chapter states learning objectives, paste them in with the text; AI hits a target you name far better than one it must infer.
Step 3: Choose a Tool
Two families: purpose-built quiz generators that accept file uploads, and general-purpose assistants where you paste text or attach a document. Pricing, free tiers and supported formats change frequently, so check current details on each site.

Step 4: Split Long Chapters Sensibly
Most tools cap input length, and even those accepting long documents produce weaker questions from them because coverage thins out. A forty-page chapter fed in whole yields questions clustered on whatever the model found salient, leaving whole sections untouched. Chunk by meaning, not page count.
- Split at section headings, not page breaks, so no concept is cut in half.
- Keep a worked example together with the explanation it illustrates.
- Ask for a set number of questions per section (say four across six sections) to control coverage.
- Keep chunks in separate files or messages so you can regenerate one weak section alone.
Step 5: Control Question Type and Difficulty
Left to itself, AI defaults to definition-recall multiple choice, which tests reading speed rather than understanding. Name the format (four-option multiple choice, true/false, short answer, fill in the blank), the count, and the cognitive level. The clearest lever is naming a Bloom’s taxonomy tier: “Write six multiple-choice questions at the Apply level of Bloom’s taxonomy, each presenting a short novel scenario the student must reason about using the chapter’s framework.” Mixing tiers, such as four Remember, four Understand and four Apply, gives a natural difficulty ramp.
Two instructions consistently improve output: ask for distractors reflecting common student misconceptions rather than obviously wrong options, and ask the tool to cite the source sentence supporting each answer. Step 6: Review Every Question Against the Source
AI output always needs checking. Errors fall into four recognizable categories, and knowing them makes review fast.
- Wrong keyed answer. The question is fine but the marked option is not what the chapter supports. Check every key against the text, not your memory.
- Two defensible answers. A distractor is also technically correct, or correct under an assumption the stem does not rule out. Rewrite it or tighten the stem.
- Answerable without reading. If general knowledge or elimination gets a student there, the question tests nothing. Watch for the longest option being correct, or three absurd distractors beside one plausible one.
- Hallucinated content. A date, name, formula or definition appearing nowhere in the source, most common when the chapter was thin on a topic and the model filled the gap.
Diagrams, data tables and equations are the weakest point here. AI misreads figures, garbles subscripts and exponents, and invents values from tables it could not parse. Treat any question depending on a figure or equation as unverified until you check it against the page, and consider excluding figure-based content from generation and writing those questions by hand.
Getting the Questions Into a Quiz Platform
- Copy and paste. Slowest, but works everywhere and lets you edit as you go.
- Spreadsheet or CSV import. Ask for output as a table, one row per question, with columns for the stem, each option, the correct answer and an explanation. Paste it into a spreadsheet and match the column order your platform’s import template expects. Fastest beyond about fifteen questions.
- Built-in export. Some generators export directly to a quiz platform’s format or host a shareable quiz of their own. Check what your tool currently supports.

Copyright: What You Can and Cannot Do
Textbook chapters are copyrighted. Generating practice questions from one for your own class, or from your own assigned reading, is ordinary educational use and what teachers already do by hand. Distribution changes the picture.
- Do not republish the source text. Uploading a chapter PDF to a public quiz library, or quoting long passages verbatim, redistributes the original work.
- Check your institution’s policy on uploading licensed materials to third-party AI services; some publisher licences and district rules restrict this regardless of copyright law.
- Attribute the source in your quiz description. It costs nothing and makes provenance clear.

A Realistic Time Budget
Expect a few minutes preparing the file, a couple writing the prompt, under a minute of generation per chunk, then the real work: checking every question against the source. Review is the longest phase, and should be. AI saves the blank-page cost of composing stems and distractors, not the judgement of whether a question is fair. Can AI read a scanned PDF directly?
Not reliably. A scanned PDF is a set of images, and most text-based tools see an empty document. Some accept image uploads and extract text, with quality depending on the scan. Safest is OCR first, via Acrobat, Google Drive or an OCR service, then checking the converted text before generating.
How long should each chunk of a chapter be?
Follow the chapter’s structure rather than a word count. One section heading per chunk usually works well, since each chunk covers one coherent idea and questions stay focused. How do I get harder questions instead of simple recall?
Name the cognitive level explicitly. Is it legal to generate a quiz from a copyrighted textbook?
Creating practice questions from an assigned chapter for your own class is normal educational use. The line to watch is redistribution: do not republish the source text, do not upload the chapter to a public quiz library, and avoid questions reproducing long verbatim passages.
